What is linear encoder?

A linear encoder is a sensor that allows to record movement of an object along one axis.

Such sensor has a special scale in the design with marks located on its surface. Passing marks through the sensor indicates current change in position.

Linear encoders can be both optical and magnetic. In the first case, marks are placed on the scale, through which concentrated light beam passes into receiver. In the second case, the strip is applied with magnetic poles that are in contact with a special sensitive sensor.

By the method of obtaining information, linear encoders can be incremental, absolute, potentiometric and magnetostrictive.

The most popular models of linear sensors manufactured by ELTRA are widely represented on our site.
